Freight carriers
TERFFs
From 2010 certified international freight carriers will have access to all Trans European Rail Freight Freeways (TERFFs). These railroad lines connect European ports to the industrial hinterland. NedTrain is building a state-of-the-art maintenance yard at the port of Rotterdam, a strategic location at a natural stopping point along the route. Beginning 2010 this depot will welcome it’s first customers. Inspections and maintenance will be carried out at this facility.
Single Safety System
Planned improvements to trans-European rail transport include a new safety system. Currently, every European country has its own system which necessitates the time-consuming coupling up of a new locomotive at every border crossing. The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) has been designed to resolve this problem by enabling a single locomotive to run across different countries.
Competitive Position
Research has shown that opening the TERFFs will increase rail freight transport by approximately 5.7 percent over the next few years. Fierce competition means that maintenance will play a key role in keeping downtime to a minimum. The NedTrain Rotterdam port maintenance yard will be one of the largest maintenance plants on the TREFFs.
Environmental Requirements
In addition to the TREFFs and the introduction of the ERTMS, the European Union also plans to tighten environmental requirements and encourages freight carriers to use electric rolling stock in the future. NedTrain is fully equipped to accommodate this new trend.
